Speakers not working

*****

HC: My speakers don't appear to be working - how can I test the sound card and the speakers? Is it simple to do?

*****

Hi HC

I'm guessing you've checked the obvious, like cables and power and volume. If you have, then the best bet is to visit the Control Panel and check out the "Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices" settings.

Just have a look through the settings for anything obvious - like the "mute" feature enabled or perhaps "Device not working properly" notices.

If everything looks kosher, then it could be a more serious hardware problem. You might try reinstalling the drivers if you know how, otherwise give me a call for an appointment.

vsmon.exe: DLL initialisation failed

*****

HC: When I log off (on every occasion) the following appears in a rectangular box: " vsmon.exe: DLL Initialization failed - The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down"

HC: What does it mean and how can I prevent this slogan from appearing when I close down? What is this all about?

*****

Hi HC,

The vsmon.exe is a service that belongs to Zone Alarm, so if it is giving some problems then it has most likely got some sort of corruption.

I would recommend visiting www.zonelabs.com and downloading the latest Free version of ZoneAlarm and then completely physically disconnecting from the Internet so that you can upgrade or reinstall the programme.

Note: If you "upgrade", all previous settings will remain. If you do a "clean install", you'll lose your settings (that's only important if you have a home network or other customisationised settings).

Spam to new domain

*****
PH> Subject: Re: ....collecting from your web site..

PH> REGARDING YOUR DOMAIN NAME SHOWN ABOVE / CHARITY CONTACT ONLY:

PH> we email your web site to 2,500,000 opt-in emails for free

PH> http://www.randomdomainname.tld

*****

PH> How on earth did these guys get to us??? Any ideas???

PH> Anything we have not done, but should have done, to minimise non solicited emails?

Hi PH,

It's spam - they send it to random_name@yourdomain.com and it comes through to you both as you're both setup as the catch-all address recipients. As soon as you purchase a domain, spammers will know and immediately start emailing random, common email addresses.

To minimise this type of spam, it is best to set the catchall to reject messages not sent to a valid email address and then make sure you have all the necessary email addresses accurately setup.

Anti-Virus software - change update frequency?

HC> I notice that when I boot up the anti virus software kicks in and downloads updates; this happens more or less daily (how can I change this to weekly or monthly?).

YB: it's actually a very good thing that the anti-virus software updates everyday. Everytime it updates it is downloading the most recent and up-to-date listings of virus names.

If your anti-virus happens to not update this week and a new virus comes out tomorrow, then your PC will be vulnerable to it since your anti-virus program doesn't know that it's a virus (yet - it will only know next week).

Aside from that, you can't change the frequency of updates - it checks daily automatically. ;-)

All the best,

Macromedia Flash Player - safe to install?

HC> Whilst accessing regularly used (and trusted by me) website, I keep getting a bar flashing at the top of the screen suggesting I download "Macromedia Flash 7 (Active X controls)". Should I install this please and if not how can I prevent this bar flashing every occasion I go to a new website?

YB: Yes, you certainly can install it. There's no danger and the Flash player will only add functionality to your browsing experience.

All the best,

Editing HOSTS file

PH: Is it easy to uninstall HOSTS file (or the changes it makes to the host file)?

YB: Yes, it's just an ordinary file, so you can open it in Notepad and delete whatever was put in there and restore it
back to it's original state.

PH: Is it possible to "allow" a site that HOSTS file otherwise blocks? E.g. to allow Google ads?

YB: As mentioned above, since it can be edited with Notepad, you can open it up and search (Ctrl+F) for "google" and you'll find all the entries associated with google's advertising.

YB: Then all you have to do is put a hash (#) in front of the entries you want enabled and it will be ignored as if you had completely deleted it.

Hope that helps,

Spy- and Adware (generically Malware) protection

Hi PH,

It all looks about right - perhaps slightly overkill with the spyware blockers/killers, but it does help to be safe as its expensive to get someone to come out and recover and fix everything.

Also, yes: Firefox is somewhat safer in that respect because many of the viruses / exploits are designed to use security holes in the world's most popular browser, IE.

That doesn't mean that Firefox doesn't have any holes, just that there aren't very many hackers looking to exploit them since they know it's usually technically savvy people using Firefox anyway (they have security measures in place).

Still, most of those security recommendations are right on the money.

The HOSTS file that they're recommending does work with Firefox because it has nothing to do with the browser. The HOSTS file is the file that all networking services use before connecting to the Internet (put simply).

Note: using this file can and does upset some websites and can even make it impossible to see a website. I've been using it for sometime now and there are some ad's that you do want to let through (like Google Ad's in search results) so that you can get the full experience - or just plain see the website!

Hope that helps,

Yvan

Yvan, What are your thoughts to the below?

In my view - Maybe the most important (apart from the obvious of having an antivirus) is not to use IE but Mozilla Firefox.

However, note that the suggested Host file will not work with Firefox,
so I will look for something else. Any ideas?

Avoid Web Browser Hijackers
There are many ways for someone to hijack your browser.......

The hijacker could be a .dll file or an .exe file or a .reg file or a combination of any of these. It could be in the root C:/ directory or C:/Windows or C:/Windows/system or just about any other directory. There is no constant, everything is variable, the only certain thing is that it is getting through a security loophole on your computer, be it security settings or a lack of patches/updates.

(1)
First thing to do....click tools...Windows update..... and download all critical updates.

(2)
Second is to download and install Spywareblaster.

(3)
Third download and install Spywareguard.

These programs take up very little resources and run un-noticed in the background.

(4)
Fourth download and install Spybot Search and Destroy.

Always check for updates before running. Click the immunize button..... and while you're there (at this page) you can lock your homepage if you want to. As with an anti-virus program - check for updates at least once a week, with all the above programs.

(5)
Fifth download IE-SPYAD.

IE-SPYAD stops advertisers and marketers from automatically installing adware onto your PC without your permission. We highly recommend it.

Check out this link for more tips from one of the top anti-spyware experts.

(6)
Install this HOSTS file (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) onto your computer -- it will block your PC from accessing known malicious web sites, sites that contain viruses and malware.
None of this can guarantee 100% that you won't be hijacked - but it will certainly go a long way.

(7)
Make sure you have a firewall. (More info)
These are popular firewalls:
Agnitum Outpost Firewall PRO
Agnitum Outpost Firewall FREE
Norton Internet Security
Norton Personal Firewall
Kerio Personal Firewall FREE
Tiny Personal Firewall
Sygate Personal Firewall PRO
Sygate Personal Firewall FREE
McAfee Personal Firewall
Black Ice Defender
Zone Alarm Pro
Zone Alarm Firewall FREE -> http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

Compare them before you decide: http://www.agnitum.com/php_scripts/compare2.php

(8)
Get anti-virus software.
Download free AVG anti virus software.

TipTop PC Support Blog Welcome

Hi All,

welcome to the TipTop-PC.com support blog!

I've started this blog as I realised that I have been providing technical support and advice over email to my clients and friends for several years now and keep meaning to put all of it together and get it online as an FAQ.

I realised that it would be much easier if I simply posted the query and reply to a blog - I'm not likely to get a round tuit for the FAQ project anytime soon!

So, PC and computer maintenance, support, virus cleaning, data recovery, protection, networking, wireless - all the usual stuff that we all have to work with if we come into contact with a computer - will be mentioned here.

If you want to find something specific, best to use the Ctrl+F key to find some keywords and hopefully find the support you were looking for - or you got lucky and found it through a search engine that has already indexed it neatly for your keyword search!

If you have any questions yourself, visit the main site and click on Contact Us to send me an email and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible (keeping in mind I also have to earn a living and don't spend all my time at my own computer!).

All the best and happy computing!
